IPod: The Suave, Trendy and Handy New-Generation Player.

I really love music, I therefore love my iPod. I always bring it with me when I’m going out, it’s so cool to have my favorite music with me wherever I go. So what’s the story behind this fantastic little gadget? Well….

The smaller it is the better - a motto the revolutionary iPods certainly follow. So does the present generation of suave iPod owners who swear by this tiny little machine. Into this contraption which weighs less than an ounce and is 1.62 inches in length, one can easily transfer a multitude of audio tracks which are then played for them by the machine.

“The biggest thing in small” according to manufacturers at Apple - the iPod Shuffle perhaps initiated the trend of a flash memory and had a capacity of holding 1 GB worth of files. This meant around 240 songs could be stored in it, each being roughly four minutes long. The Shuffle is only .78 ounces of weight and can run for the whole of 12 hours. And it had a 512 MB version as well. And you can pin it on to anything you want - bags, hats, wallets, pockets and just about anything else. Handy or what?

Since the sphere of digital media and electronics dictates that everything be reduced to the smallest possible size it is obviously not surprising that this iPod, more than any previous version, has been able to carve out a niche for itself in the bigger bazaar.

How it came about:

Before the iPod was released there existed many a digital instrument such as cameras, organizers and video recorders but good quality digital media players were missing entirely. This contributed greatly to the building of the iPod. The Apple iPod followed by separate versions for the Windows and Mac users which naturally helped the sales. But in order to sustain people’s attention and continue selling freshly improved models were called for and this was achieved remarkably well. A record 42 million iPods have been sold ever since it was made available in the market and it has thereby maintained its top slot.

Fierce competition in the market:

New designs are required in order to stay in the running. The first iPod with a color screen was introduced in the year 2005. Samsung claimed to follow it up with an even snazzier model. The Video iPod which is fifth according to the iPod genealogy was born due to this stiff competition at which time the iPod Nano was a top draw.

The newly introduced Video-iPod:

The newly introduced Video iPod is equipped with a 16 bit color screen, much higher resolution and can play all video formats. It comes in 30 and/or 60 GB capacities. It allows for improved organization of data and playback as well. It comes in shades of white and black and also contains a screen lock, a stop watch, a clock which shows world time, a small case which you can slip it into, a ‘fire wire’ cable and much smaller and comfortable ear-plugs.

This particular device differs in its length and breadth from other iPods and is slimmer as well. But its relatively smaller proportions are no deterrent for the larger screen it has. It even runs for anything between 16 to 20 hours at a stretch. Only, this is reduced when you watch videos. Newer technology means reduction in dimensions although we may have trouble understanding how such a tiny device could be capable of performing so many functions.

Ever since the first iPod was introduced we have been bombarded with many other such equally useful and handy devices. Of course one cannot predict the future of such technological advancement but I am positive something fresh and innovative will greet us soon. One thing I am certain of though and that is the market will always see many able contenders fighting it out for the top slot.
